The Lethbridge Astronomy Society has a major commitment to public education. Throughout the fall, winter and spring the Society holds evening sessions for school classes, Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, and other various youth groups that are booked in advance with our Education Coordinator. We usually have a brief introduction about our Society and then a slide show about our solar system and deep sky objects. Then, if the weather permits, we go outside and review the night sky and have the kids look through our telescope at selected objects. The Society has visited a number of schools in nearby communities in the last several years, such as schools in Fort MacLeod, Picture Butte, Coaldale, and Milk River.
We also instruct Astronomy Laboratory to students from The University of Lethbridge. Using the resources of the Oldman River Observatory, we offer instruction and hands-on experience to enhance the education experience for these students.
Adult group presentations are also held to allow members of the local community the opportunity to experience the excitement of viewing the universe above us.
A typical presentation consists of a brief introduction to the Society, a brief review of how to use binoculars and the Dobsonian telescopes we have for demonstrations, an optional slide show and then a tour of the night sky with the participants operating the telescopes under direction of Society members. Themes such as "Constellation and star identification " are used.
