Located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, The Lethbridge Astronomy Society is comprised of enthusiastic members from all walks of life, eager to study and share their love of the night sky, astronomy and space science. The mandate of the society is to facilitate awareness of astronomical topics by establishing and maintaining a resource center, observatory and library and by creating and running various educational programs and opportunities for the citizens of Lethbridge and area.
The Oldman River Observatory is one of the best equipped amateur astronomy facilites in Canada. Our main building includes an equipment room with several portable telescopes, a library with over 600 titles, a lounge area and kitchen and a presentation room that can seat up to thirty people. Just outside the main building is a viewing platform for our portable scopes and outdoor presentations.
A separate building on the site, The Rick Ponomar Astronomical Laboratory, has a 5.5 metre dome housing a 14" (35.5 cm) Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, as well as its own presentation room. This room is used for group viewing of live astronomical images captured by a Mallincam video astronomy camera attached to the Celestron scope. Many of our members are keenly interested in astrophotograhy, posting excellent images on this site and on our Facebook page. The facilities, equipment and programs of the society are all funded by the efforts of a small group of member volunteers. There are no employees or individuals receiving reimbursement for their efforts. As a Registered Charity in Canada, we gratefully accept any and all donations.
